Introducing you to the team at Heart Saver
Our people are the heart of our business. As a local Kumeu business, we would love for our community to get to know the wonderful, passionate people who make our company great and what makes them each so special.
This month, we kick off with our Managing Director, Mike Mander.
Mike is an AED specialist with an extensive emergency service background, including having served as a volunteer firefighter for 28 years. He’s also a medic and often runs our first-aid training courses. He’s passionate about helping others gain confidence and practical skills in assisting those in emergency situations.
A few years back, Mike experienced a serious health scare which led to a major reassessment of his life. Doctors and specialists provided Mike with some confronting potential outcomes which was a real wake-up call for him to make a number of significant lifestyle changes.
Previously, Mike couldn’t run on the treadmill for more than 35 seconds, but he worked towards successfully losing 40 kgs, has gone on to compete in over a dozen Ironman events (including representing NZ in his age group at the 2021 70.3 World Champs in the US) and he even completed the gruelling Kathmandu Coast to Coast event this year.
He never imagined that he’d be able to turn his life around like this, but it shows how remarkably capable the human body is when you put your mind to it. Mike has learnt not to take life for granted and he brings this mindset to not only his personal life but in his professional life, where he’s grateful to contribute to helping save the lives of other Kiwis every day.
"Some people are unlucky when they get a health scare, it can be too late for them to make a change. For me, I got it in time, I am not young, but at 46, it gave me the wake-up call I needed.
"I just want to motivate people who are thinking about doing something but have that self-doubt. Anything is possible, and I think that's the key. A lot of people think 'I'd love to do it' and that was me."
Passionate about all things related to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and First Aid Training, Mike is always happy to have a chat and see how he and the team at Heart Saver can continue to promote education around heart health, community AED programs, training, and support in our local community.
